Following the dissolution of his acclaimed duo Ameli Paul, Berlin producer Paul Valentin delivers his first solo release in a decade with a stellar debut EP on Feines Tier. The package opens with "ELVAU," a dreamy, shimmering breakbeat collaboration featuring intimate voice recordings from actor Liv Lisa Fries, which is then twisted into a wonky, psychedelic trip by the legendary DJ Koze. Valentin then pivots to the dark, rolling synth-arps of "MALFUNCTION" and the heavy, peak-time anger of "WHATTHE!" before closing on a hopeful note with the 303-driven melancholia of "LISTEN"—a track further transformed by Thomass Jackson and label head Philipp Fein into a slow-mo, anachronistic chugger reminiscent of Andrew Weatherall's finest sets.
